Bringing a dog from Great Britain is simpler than the island’s Crown Dependency status suggests. The Manx government’s guidance is unambiguous: there is free movement of most dogs between Great Britain and the Isle of Man, with no animal health requirements in that direction — no rabies vaccination for the journey, no health certificate, no pre-notification. The asymmetry catches people out on the way home: taking a pet on from the island to Northern Ireland is treated as an export to the EU, and that needs a vet appointment made weeks ahead. Our full guide to taking a dog to the island covers the routes and the return rules.

Finding somewhere to sleep is the narrower part. Of the 89 places we list across the island, 21 state that they take pets — close to one in four, and spread across every kind of stay rather than concentrated in self-catering: holiday homes and hotels lead, with guest houses, B&Bs, apartments, a villa and both of the island’s hostels among them. If you would rather see the full island-wide choice first, start there and come back.

Geographically the list leans east. Douglas holds 8 of the 21, Peel 4 and Ramsey 3, with the other 6 scattered between Castletown, Port St Mary, Onchan, Ballasalla and the lanes near Ballaugh. So there is real choice in the capital, and if you want somewhere quiet you will be booking early. Four of the 21 also have a hot tub.

One hard stop, worth knowing before you book anything: the types of dog banned in the United Kingdom — Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and Japanese Tosa — are also prohibited from import into the Isle of Man, as is the XL Bully. It is a type test rather than a breed test, so it turns on how a dog is built rather than what its papers say. If there is any doubt at all, settle it with the Manx authorities before you book a crossing, not at the ferry terminal.

Each of these states on its Booking.com listing that pets are allowed. That is the operator's own wording, not our judgement — and a property missing from this list has not necessarily refused dogs, it simply has not listed the policy. Terms differ: some charge, some cap the number, some ask first. Check the listing, and ring ahead if it matters.

Common questions

Before you book

How many dog-friendly places to stay are there on the Isle of Man?
We list 21 across the island — close to one in four of the 89 places we cover. Douglas holds 8, Peel 4 and Ramsey 3, with the remaining 6 at Castletown, Port St Mary, Onchan, Ballasalla and out in the lanes near Ballaugh. Each one states on its own Booking.com listing that pets are allowed. Others may well take dogs without having listed the policy, so a place you like that is not here is worth an email rather than a write-off.
Does my dog need a pet passport or a rabies jab for the Isle of Man?
Not from Great Britain. There is free movement of most dogs, cats and ferrets between Great Britain and the Isle of Man, with no animal health certificate, rabies vaccination or tapeworm treatment required for the journey, and no pre-notification. Movement direct from Northern Ireland is equally unrestricted for most dogs. The direction that catches people out is the way home: taking a pet from the island on to Northern Ireland is treated as an export to the European Union and needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination, an Animal Health Certificate and tapeworm treatment, arranged with your vet weeks ahead.
Are dogs allowed on Isle of Man beaches?
Douglas is now the exception. Since August 2026 the borough council has allowed dogs on the whole of Douglas Beach all year round and at any time of day, as a trial, on condition that owners clean up after them and keep them under control. Peel still restricts its beach from the start of April, and Port Erin, Port St Mary and Laxey from the start of May, each running through to September. These are town-by-town byelaws written by each set of commissioners rather than one island-wide rule, and the Douglas arrangement is explicitly a trial, so check the current position for the beach you are heading to before you set off.
Can I leave my dog alone in the property?
That is set by the owner, not by the pets-allowed flag, and plenty of otherwise welcoming places say no. It is the single most useful question to ask before you book, because the answer decides whether you can spend a day somewhere that does not admit dogs — a castle, a museum, a long lunch — or whether the whole trip has to be planned around the dog coming too. Ground-floor accommodation is the other thing worth checking, and it matters more than people expect for an older dog.
