Comis Hotel & Golf Resort

Comis stands on Ballacutchel Road at Mount Murray, in open country above Douglas, and it is built low and modern: grey standing-seam roofs, full-height glazing and a golf course running right up to the walls.

A blue sign brings you off the road and up a drive through trees. Ponds and clipped fairways sit in front of the building, and a greenkeeper is usually out on a mower somewhere in the view. Reception is staffed, with flowers on the desk and a lift to the upper floors.

Corridors, columns and two dining rooms

A colonnaded corridor with floral displays links the public rooms. One restaurant is bright, white linen and soft armchairs with windows the length of one wall looking straight out over the greens. The other is darker and warmer, timber tables under strung lights. Afternoon tea comes out on tiered stands, sometimes carried outside to a table on the grass.

The bedrooms

Rooms are calm and pale, with light oak furniture, upholstered chairs by the window, a desk, a kettle and tea things. Doubles, twins and a four-poster suite are all in the mix, some looking over the course and the water. Bathrooms are tiled in cream and stone with a bath or shower, and several rooms are laid out for wheelchair access with grab rails and a lower sink.

The pool wing and the course

A long indoor pool runs beneath arched wall niches, and beyond it are a sauna, a fitness room, treatment rooms for massage and an outdoor hot tub set in dark slate with planting around it. Outside there is a terrace with furniture, and the golf course itself.

Down the hill

The road drops from Mount Murray into Douglas, where the promenade, the harbour and the shops are.
