About Port Erin

A guide to staying in Port Erin

Port Erin is a Victorian seaside village in the south-west, built around a deep bay closed in by headlands at both ends. The beach is sand, the water is the most sheltered on the island, and the promenade and village run back from it up the slope.

Bradda Head rises at the northern end of the bay, topped by Milner's Tower — built in 1871 in the shape of a lock and key for William Milner, a Liverpool safe-maker who paid for it. The walk up and along the cliffs is short and gives you the bay, the Calf of Man and, on a clear day, the Mourne Mountains across the Irish Sea.

The Isle of Man Steam Railway finishes its run from Douglas here, on the original Victorian narrow-gauge line, which is far and away the best way to arrive. Beyond the village the road carries on to Cregneash — a hill village of thatched Manx cottages kept as a working farm museum — and then down to the Sound, where the tide races through the narrow strait between the island and the Calf of Man.

There are very few places to stay in Port Erin, and they are a mixed handful rather than a category, so there are no separate pages by property type here — everything we list in the village is on this page. It fills up in July and August, which matters more than usual when the supply is this small.

Common questions

Port Erin accommodation FAQ

Is Port Erin good for a beach holiday?
It has the most sheltered sandy bay on the island, enclosed by headlands on both sides, with the promenade and the village running back from it. If a beach is the point of the trip, it is the obvious choice on the south coast — but there are very few places to stay, so book early.
Does the steam railway run to Port Erin?
Yes. The Isle of Man Steam Railway runs from Douglas and terminates in the village, on the original narrow-gauge line. It is a seasonal service, so check the current timetable before building a trip around it.
What is near Port Erin?
Bradda Head and Milner’s Tower at the north end of the bay, and, south along the coast, Cregneash — a preserved Manx crofting village — and the Sound, looking across the strait to the Calf of Man. The coastal footpath links all of them.
Why is there no hotels page for Port Erin?
We only build a page for a property type where at least three real listings sit behind it. Port Erin has one of most things, so a hotels page would be a page with one hotel on it. Everything we list in the village is on this page instead.
