About Port St Mary

A guide to staying in Port St Mary

Port St Mary is the quieter of the island's two southern villages — a genuine fishing harbour with boats in it, a curve of houses along the front, and the sands of Chapel Bay just beyond. It sits on the eastern side of the headland that separates it from Port Erin, facing south and east rather than west, which is why the two places feel so different despite being minutes apart.

The inner harbour dries at low tide and the Alfred Pier shelters the outer one; the lifeboat station sits on the front. It is a working harbour rather than a marina, and the village has never been rebuilt as a resort in the way the bigger bays were.

The coastal footpath is the main reason walkers stay here. The Raad ny Foillan runs south from the end of the promenade along the cliff tops past Perwick Bay and Spanish Head — the highest cliffs on this stretch of coast — and on to the Sound. It is exposed, spectacular walking and among the best places on the island for seabirds and seals.

We list only a few stays in the village, so there are no separate pages by property type — everything we have is on this page. Castletown is the nearest town with more to it, and Port Erin is the next bay round.

Common questions

Port St Mary accommodation FAQ

How is Port St Mary different from Port Erin?
They sit on opposite sides of the same headland. Port Erin faces west into a big sandy bay and is the busier of the two; Port St Mary faces south and east, has a working fishing harbour rather than a promenade, and is noticeably quieter. Both are within easy reach of the Sound and Cregneash.
Is there a beach at Port St Mary?
Chapel Bay, just along from the harbour, is the village’s sandy beach. The larger and more sheltered beach at Port Erin is a short distance away over the headland.
What walks start from Port St Mary?
The Raad ny Foillan coastal path runs south from the end of the promenade along the cliffs past Perwick and Spanish Head to the Sound. It is one of the finest sections of the island’s coastal footpath, and it starts in the village itself.
Can you stay in Port St Mary without a car?
It is manageable — buses serve the village and the steam railway station at Port Erin is close by — but the south of the island rewards having a car. Check current bus timetables before committing to a car-free trip.
