Voyage Hostel - Beds & Ensuite Family Rooms with shared kitchen

Voyage Hostel stands at number 38 Murrays Road in Douglas, and it is the sort of hostel somebody has actually thought about. Pine bunks with their own privacy screens, family rooms with a bathroom off them, and one big kitchen that everybody shares.

What you meet first is the shared ground floor: a wood-floored room with a run of original stone wall left exposed along one side, kitchen units fitted opposite, and a long pine bench table in the middle.

The stone wall and the shared kitchen

The kitchen is a proper one rather than a token gesture, black and white units set against the bare stone with a sink, a microwave, cupboard space and an extractor hood over the counter. A high counter with round wooden stools runs alongside, and the bench table takes anyone who would rather sit down to eat. It is the room where guests end up talking to each other.

Bunks with screens of their own

The bunk rooms are pine, and each berth has a slatted timber screen along its open side, so a top bunk reads as a berth rather than a shelf. Ladders, hooks and a clothes rail come with them. The family rooms pair a large double bed with bunks in the same room, hang a television on the wall and have a private bathroom off them with a basin, a shower and a hairdryer. Bed linen is provided.

Murrays Road and the walk to the bay

Number 38 sits in the streets behind the seafront, so the promenade and Douglas Beach are a walk from the door. The rest of Douglas spreads out from there, with the shops and the harbour close enough that a car is optional.

Who it works for

Families who want bunks and their own bathroom without paying for two hotel rooms, walkers and cyclists over for a few days, and anyone here for a week of racing who would sooner cook in the shared kitchen than eat out every night of it.
