Mountain Dream Cottage

Mountain Dream Cottage is a white-rendered semi on Bowring Road in Ramsey, plainer from the street than it turns out to be inside. Three bedrooms, space for six, and the original beams still showing where the roof slopes in.

From the pavement it is whitewashed stone under slate, a low railing and a clipped evergreen by the door. Everything sits on two floors and the bedrooms are reached by stairs.

Through the ground floor

Kitchen and dining run together at the back, with an island under an extractor, a glass-topped table, tiled floor and glazed doors that pull the light in. The sitting room is carpeted and unfussy: a long dark sofa, a low wooden table, a television on the wall and a streaming service on it. A separate utility takes the washing machine and tumble dryer, and the kitchen has a dishwasher, oven, microwave and coffee machine.

Three rooms up under the beams

Upstairs the ceilings follow the roofline and the beams are left exposed. Two bedrooms take double beds and the third a pair of singles, so six sleep properly. One room is dressed in floral pinks, one has a rooflight set over the bed, and one looks out through a wide window towards the sea. The shower rooms are recent, panelled in wood effect with wall-hung basins, and there is a second toilet.

Out through the back doors

The glazed doors open onto decking with outdoor furniture on it, fenced in and away from the road. Somewhere to eat outside when the island obliges.

Bowring Road, and the north of the island

Bowring Road is a quiet residential street in Ramsey, the main town at the northern end of the island, with its harbour and its beach. The airport lies away at the far southern end.

Who it works for

Families, or two or three couples travelling together, who want a whole house with a laundry and a kitchen and a base in the north rather than a room in Douglas.
