The Cottage, Bridge House

Bridge House is a white house on Mill Road in Laxey, sitting right against the stone arches of the old railway viaduct. The Cottage is one of three self-contained flats inside it, and it takes four.

The frontage is shared with the other two: a hedge, planting and a run of hard standing where cars pull in, with the viaduct rising behind the roofline. The Cottage has its own door off it, opening straight into the living room.

The sitting room and the kitchen

Wood floor runs through the living space, where a grey sofa faces the television across a patterned rug and a pair of glass globe lamps stand in the corner. It opens through to a white kitchen with a slim dining table, an oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine and a glazed door at the far end that lets the light in.

Under the beam

The bedroom sits beneath a sloping ceiling crossed by an exposed timber beam, with a white slatted double bed, a chest of drawers either side and wall lights above. The windows are small and deep-set, which keeps it dark and quiet. The sofa bed in the living room sleeps the other two, and the shower room is compact and tiled white with a glass enclosure.

The paved corner by the kitchen door

Through the kitchen door there is a small paved area with chairs and a table set against a stone wall, part of the grounds the three flats share rather than a private garden of your own.

The wheel and the shore

The Great Laxey Wheel stands further up the glen, and the beach and harbour at Laxey lie the other way, down where the river reaches the sea.

Best for

A couple, or two adults with a child or two on the sofa bed, wanting somewhere quiet on the east coast with the electric railway running through the village.
