About Great Laxey Mine Railway
A narrow-gauge line built to move ore, men and machinery around the Great Laxey lead and zinc mine, once one of the richest in the British Isles. Closed along with the mine in the 1920s, the track was relaid by volunteers and reopened in 2004, running through the island's only rail tunnel to reach the site of the former washing floors. It sits alongside the Laxey Wheel and forms part of the same industrial heritage trail, giving a sense of the scale of the mining operation that shaped the village long before tourism did.
