Bed and Blueberry is a two-bedroom suite with a kitchen and bathroom of its own, upstairs in a blue-painted terraced house on Castlemona Avenue, a quiet residential street set back from the Douglas seafront.

The front of the house is unmistakable. Deep blue render, a white door numbered 18 with a four-star plaque beside it, and hanging baskets of petunias on either side. The hallway carries the same blue and white, with console tables, a lit lamp and flowers at the foot of the carpeted stairs. The suite is up those stairs, and there is no lift.

The kitchenette and the round white table

Having your own kitchen is the point of this one. A compact kitchenette holds a sink, oven, hob, microwave, toaster and kettle under an extractor hood, with kitchenware in the cupboards, so nobody is tied to eating out. Meals happen at a round white pedestal table with folding chairs, below a wall-mounted television. Small touches run through the rooms: gilt mirrors, lamps lit on a sideboard, roses in a vase, a tea tray laid out on the dressing table.

Two rooms, five beds

The bedrooms sleep five between them. One holds two single beds, two curtained windows and a little table with chairs. The other has a double and a single under blue and white patchwork quilts, with a lamp lit on each side. Both have a wardrobe and a clothes rack. The shower room is laid with wood-effect flooring and fitted with a glazed walk-in cubicle, basin and toilet, and towels are put out for you.

Down to the bay

The promenade is a short walk off, with Manx flags flying above the seafront terraces, the Tower of Refuge out on its rock and the Steam Packet ferries working in and out of the bay. The Villa Marina, the beach and the rest of Douglas follow from there.
