Baie Mooar House, Boutique B&B

Baie Mooar House is a large cream and blue Victorian villa on Coburg Road, standing above Ramsey on a quiet residential hill. Jen and Simon Hamilton have run it as a B&B for a decade.

It sits back from the road behind a clipped hedge and a strip of garden, with a blue front door under a hanging basket and the name lettered on a board beside it. Parking is on the street outside.

The hall, the little bar and the breakfast room

A chandelier hangs in the arched hallway and a runner climbs the staircase; every bedroom is reached that way, so there are stairs to manage. Breakfast is served in a blue room at separate tables, under a second chandelier and a deep bay window. There is also a small bar with a copper top, green herringbone tiling and orange leather stools, which is where people tend to end up in the evening.

A colour scheme for each room

No two bedrooms match. One is sage green with a wooden bedstead and an armchair by the window, another teal with a small fireplace, another deep navy with an upholstered bed, and there is a soft yellow one and one papered in green leaves. Bathrooms are private and get the same treatment, including one hung with shoals of painted fish above the tiling. Several rooms have a bay or corner window with a chair set into it, looking over the rooftops towards the hills.

Down to the harbour

The hill drops into Ramsey, where boats lie against the quay in front of the painted waterfront terraces and a Victorian swing bridge crosses the river. The long curve of the bay opens out beyond.

Who it suits

Couples who would rather stay somewhere with a character of its own than in a chain, and walkers and cyclists working the north of the island who want breakfast cooked for them and a drink waiting afterwards.
