About Niarbyl

A rocky promontory on the west coast between Port Erin and Peel, whose Manx name — 'the tail' — describes the low spine of rock reaching out into the sea. On a clear day the view takes in the Calf of Man to the south and the hills of Ireland to the west. Niarbyl also sits directly on the Iapetus Suture, the geological join marking where two ancient continents collided some 400 million years ago, making it a genuine stop for anyone interested in the rocks as well as the view. A cluster of whitewashed fishermen's cottages below the headland has appeared in several films, most recognisably Waking Ned.
