About Douglas Bay Horse Tramway
A horse-drawn tram service has run along Douglas promenade since 1876, making it one of the oldest continuously operating horse tramways anywhere. Double-deck tramcars run down the centre of the road for around a mile and a half along the seafront, drawn by working horses stabled at the Derby Castle depot. The service was rebuilt and reopened in 2022 after a period of closure for track relaying, and it remains council-run rather than a private novelty operation — a genuinely old form of public transport rather than a re-enactment of one.
