About Tynwald Hill
An artificial mound in the village of St John's, built up in four circular tiers and traditionally said to contain soil brought from each of the island's seventeen parishes. It's here, on Tynwald Day every 5 July, that Acts of Tynwald are formally proclaimed in English and Manx before the assembled parliament — a practice with roots in Norse open-air lawmaking that has continued, with interruptions, for over a thousand years. Outside of Tynwald Day the hill sits quietly at the centre of the village green, a low grassy mound that gives no obvious sign of the ceremony it's built for.
