About Old House of Keys
This modest limestone building opposite Castle Rushen was where the House of Keys, the elected chamber of Tynwald, sat between 1821 and 1874, before government moved to Douglas. Tynwald is generally reckoned the world's oldest parliament still in continuous existence, and the chamber here has been restored to its appearance in 1866, the year the House of Keys became a popularly elected body rather than a self-selecting one. It's a small, quiet room rather than a grand one — which is rather the point, given what was decided in it.
